After winning the last Australian Top Fuel Championship round in Perth, Phil Lamattina and his Fuchs Top Fuel Dragster couldn't repeat the success at the Summernationals last weekend at Western Sydney International Raceway.
Lamattina struggled to tame his 8000hp beast, which produced either tyre shake or spin on almost all of his passes throughout the event. The highlight being a blistering 4.67 second in the first of his two exhibition runs on Saturday afternoon in front of a huge crowd at the Sydney complex, in what most rated as some of the best spectator conditions ever experienced in ANDRA Championship Drag Racing.
It was the unfolding of a number of issues that saw the Fuchs Top Fueler not make the qualifying line up for Saturday's action. In the first qualifying pass, a problem with the clutch system had Lamattina smoking the tyres as soon as he hit the throttle. In the second pass, an unfortunate error by the Amanda Shepherd team forced Phil to wait an excessive time in the staging lane, overheating the clutch packs along the way.
Behind the eight ball in the last qualifying pass on Friday, the lack of data from not getting down the quarter mile on the previous two occasions came back to bite the carrot farmer with yet another situation of tyres going up in smoke.
"Obviously after the highs of our win in Perth, we are disappointed with what transpired in Sydney on the weekend. The problems we had in the first two passes compounded and we never really able to find our feet again," said Phil Lamattina.
"Whilst the result doesn't look good on paper, we still know that the Fuchs Top Fueler is a fantastic race car and there are still high expectations for the rest of the season. Our 4.67 [second] pass was certainly no fluke and it showed the car has got what it takes."
Event organisers were quick to allow Lamattina two exhibition runs on Saturday - "It would have been easy to pack up on Friday night and head home but we really wanted to give the huge crowd in Sydney something to remember us by. It's a shame that we weren't doing it for real because they were really pumping in the grandstands."
On the back on the weekend's results, plus the desire to continue their rigorous development schedule, Lamattina Top Fuel Racing will take the Fuchs Top Fueler to Sydney in early April for a full test and tuning day at the scheduled bracket event.
